FROM THE BROOM CUPBOARD

Hello again from your Editor here in the broom cupboard. In this month’s issue, read about a long standing member of the Board who resigned, our champion bowler who brought back a silver medal, club activities, an article about the outing to Avelon Springs an important announcement from SASSA regarding the new cards, birthday book, calendar of events and we end with some words of wisdom.

SANDY BEAN RESIGNS FROM THE LIGHTHOUSE BOARD

As the Bible says, there is a time to come and a time to go. One of our long standing Board members Sandy Bean has decided that he needs to retire now. Sandy has been a long standing member of the Board for many years and his input has always been of great value. Sandy, I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your dedication and hard work and wish you all God’s blessings and strength. Like someone once said, getting old is not for sissies!

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR COMMONWEALTH SILVER MEDALISTS

Hearty congratulations to Princess Schroeder and Philip Walker who won a silver medal in the Bowls at the Commonwealth Games. What a brave fight back the Protea Bowlers put on. When I started watching the game, the Proteas were behind with 9 heads to 1. They then fought back, but unfortunately lost to Australia by 12 9. The Australian commentator was obviously very biased, however whenever Princess played he always remarked what a wonderful style of playing she has. Well done to the Proteas, we are proud to have a silver medallist at Lighthouse.

CLUB ACTIVITIES

Our games evening this month will be on the 9th of May, please note this is a Wednesday evening. At our social on the 24th of May which is a Thursday, we will be having a karaoke evening. If possible, let me have your song beforehand. No problem if you cannot, I will be bringing along quite a selection of tracks.

Louwarm swembadwater maak mens ongelooflik honger.

SASSA E-NEWSLETTER

Following the notice in the previous editions announcing the Government partnership between SASSA and SAPO to pay social grants, this serves to pronounce that the long talked about card has finally arrived and is ready to be launched. The new SASSA card has been available from 17 April 2018. The card is currently being piloted at selected offices and will be officially launched in May and for the swapping of the old card for the new card to commence thereafter. How will the new SASSA card work? The card is a debit card, which will work very much the same as the current SASSA card, except that it will not work at the existing cash pay points. This is because the CPS system is proprietary and will not be able to read the new card. This is why the cash beneficiaries will continue to use the existing card, only for as long as the cash payments remain an option. All new beneficiaries have to choose either the new SASSA card or direct deposits into their own bank accounts as a payment method. This is in line with Regulation 21 of the Social Assistance Act, 2004, as amended. The benefits of the new SASSA card The new card will allow for the following “free” services per month:

  • 3 cash withdrawals at merchants’ / retailers’ Point of Sale (POS) devices
  • Unlimited POS purchases;
  • 1 cash withdrawal at Post Office branch
  • 1 balance enquiry at an ATM
  • 1 mini-statement per month – drawn from ATM
  • 1 PIN reset at SAPO branch
  • Unlimited PIN resets at SASSA offices
  • Initial card issuance and 1 free card replacement
  • No EFT debits or stop orders The beneficiary will pay for cash withdrawals at bank ATMs

and also replacement cards after the first one has been replaced. Any services exceeding the above package will result in cost to the beneficiary. Procedure for swapping of the old SASSA card for the New SASSA card

  • When is it available? The card swap will start as a pilot at selected urban based cash pay points in May and then be rolled out. The programme will gain momentum in June, July and August.
  • Where will the swap be conducted? Card swap will take place at cash pay points, post office outlets and identified community venues, as identified by both SASSA and SAPO. The teams will also conduct home visits, on request for frail, disabled and immobile beneficiaries, as well as institutions where numbers of beneficiaries are present.

The contact numbers to phone to request this service will be made public as soon as the venues are announced. It’s all systems go for SASSA to launch the New SASSA card New SASSA card Categorization of beneficiaries. The card swap will start with the cash pay points and try to serve older persons first. However, full details will be made public after the launch. The schedule and procedure for card swap. Phase 1 of card swap, is envisaged to begin in mid- May 2018 with a pilot at identified pay points across regions. The roll out will target, to commence with, pay points that fall within urban areas, where sufficient payment alternative infrastructure exists. Each region has a pay point card swap plan to be implemented in May, June and July 2018. This plan is to align to the existing pay points payment schedules for the months affected. The process at the pay point for the card swap will commence with the beneficiary first collecting their monthly grant then proceeding to the card swap workstation and presenting their Identity document and old card. A biometric verification process will be undertaken on the beneficiary and on the successful completion of this a new card will be issued. It is envisaged that the process will be between 7-10 minutes to complete. The beneficiary could then be able to use the new card within the National Payment System. Required documents for the swap. Old SASSA card and the beneficiaries ID Book. Will the children be required for biometrics? No, children will not be required. The card swap will only need the person who actually collects the grant and his/her procurator if there is one. We have the biometrics for children and for all new cases the biometric enrolment is done by SASSA.
